Gina Wirth Lecture Poster Back

NOTE: This event has been postponed. Please check back for updates.?

Join the Department of Landscape Architecture and the Doctor of Design Program for a co-sponsored lecture from Gena Wirth of Scape on March 18 at 6 PM in Burns Auditorium.

Event is co-sponsored with the Doctor of Design Program as part of DDes Immersion Week.

In this lecture, SCAPE Design Principal Gena Wirth will discuss the role of design in organizing neighborhoods, cities, and regions around water systems. Drawing from three case studies at different scales – block, city, and region – she will outline some of the major challenges and opportunities posed by water systems for landscape architecture and urban design practices.
For First Avenue Water Plaza (Block scale), SCAPE integrated a high-performance stormwater management system into a public plaza along the East River in New York, NY. For Town Branch Park and Commons (City scale) in Lexington, KY, SCAPE proposed a hybrid park network, multi-modal trail system, and water filtration landscape drawing inspiration from the karst geology of Kentucky. For the ongoing Chattahoochee RiverLands Greenway Study (Regional scale) in the Metro Atlanta area, SCAPE is leading a large design team to develop a combined greenway, blueway, and tributary trail network providing recreational and ecological services for communities over a nearly 100-mile project area.

Gena Wirth is a Registered Landscape Architect and the Design Principal at SCAPE. She works with cities, community advocates, and landowners to reveal the ecological and cultural potential of public landscapes.

As Design Principal, Gena translates research into practice and leads the design of complex urban landscapes including public and private waterfronts, regional trail systems, parks, plazas, and resilience plans. Her current portfolio includes the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail, a master plan for a seven-mile linear waterfront park that connects Hudson Valley communities to the river, and the recently constructed Midtown Center Plaza, a forested public commons in the heart of Washington, D.C. Gena is an advocate for ecological systems design with the non-profit group the Dredge Research Collaborative and has taught design studios at Columbia University GSAPP, Syracuse Architecture, and Rutgers University. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture and Master of Urban Planning with Distinction from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from the University of Delaware.
